There's probably only so much we can do in the January market - plug a few gaps, make a few punts. The improvement basically needs to come from the existing squad.

We need a solid core of English players. People who will fight for our cause and know only too well how much this means to us fans. If we can have Cresswell, Antonio, Reid ( as English as some of our rugby internationals ), Noble and Carroll all at the heart of things we have a chance. It's not the dogs in our fight that matters but the fight in our dogs. On top of all that we need the players properly motivated, committed to running through brick walls for our cause, willing to more than match the opposition physically and mentally.
It's not that we're too good to go down but more like some players think they're too good to make an effort. The intensity needs restoring to our play or teams like Burnley and Hull will more than match us.

I think a formation change would be good above everything. Bring back 442. A lone striker does not work at West Ham. Fletcher and Carroll (when fit) up front. Maybe a smaller striker would be good to add. Play players in a consistent position and stop the tinkering. Antonio and Kouyate to name a couple. Need a RB also.

Then use the loan market once Tore and Zaza fuck off
First two targets would be Perez from Arsenal and Schneiderlein from Man Utd. Both hardly playing and would jump at the chance of gametime youd imagine.

I still think Defoe would be counter-productive - are we going to sit behind the ball and feed him on the break like Sunderland do? He may have scored a few in that strategy, but it's not a very good one for doing anything else.
